Nourishing Teachers

Nourishing Teachers

Are your students food literate?

If you hear about kids and school food in the news, chances are the discussion is focused on the foods that are served and how much it all costs. There are so many other ways to look at the topic, though. “Food literacy,” is creeping its way into classroom curriculum, and we at Choicelunch couldn’t be happier that students are broadening their horizons, both at school lunch tables and at classroom desks.

Did you know that when kids read about topics that are interesting to them, they are three times more likely to answer correctly on reading comprehension tests? What topic could be more universally interesting than food?

Ok, we may be biased, but teachers get it. They are increasingly bringing food-based discussions and instruction into a variety of subjects far beyond health or science: math, literature, and economics, to name just a few. To help our educational caretakers, the non-profit, Nourish working with PBS, provides FREE educational resources to increase “food literacy” (DVDs, curriculum, website and seminars) in California’s K-12 schools. The whole idea is to open a meaningful conversation about food and sustainability in our school communities. Teachers, students, school administrators, farm to school and garden coordinators, health professionals, and others can all join Nourish and help build a statewide network of good food advocates who can change our schools and our world.
