My Dad is a superb dancer. When I was young, we were fortunate to have the chance to attend a few dances together. Those memories are sweet, and so special. We both got dressed up, and my Dad made me feel like a princess. He always even made sure to give me a corsage! I had very few romantic prospects in my young life, but appreciated that my Dad set the bar high. He was the best date. Aside from owning the dance floor, he was a great socializer, an amazing conversationalist, and really funny. We always had so much fun together.
For the last few years, Grace has had the opportunity to attend a school Father-Daughter Dance with Justin. I have been on the event committee and have been a “fly on the wall” during the festivities, watching so many sweet girls and their daddies take over the dance floor. They’re talking, they’re laughing, and they’re twirling around on the dance floor. They are connecting. And it is heart-melting, let me tell you.
Aside from being sweet, it’s also important that Grace is spending this time with her Dad. Lately it is becoming clear that Grace is on the brink of the awkward “tween” years – the dreaded and inescapable time between being a little girl and being a full-blown teenager. We’ve had some glimpses into the emotional highs and lows that this stage might hold, but have yet to fully step into that realm.
Brink aside, last Friday night Grace took her Dad’s hand and led him out onto the dance floor. And, you know what? He danced with her. He took this opportunity, just like I knew he would, to twirl her, dip her, and spin her around that dance floor. They were waving their arms in the air, lip-syncing into fake microphones, and laughing their heads off. Just like those sweet, sweet memories that my own Dad made with me, Justin is making them with our daughter. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll likely end up marrying a man just like her fun-loving, dance-floor driving, silly Dad – just like I did.
