Morning Wardrobe Drama: “The Simple Hack That Saved My Sanity”

“Save the drama for your Mama?”  Ever heard that one?!   Mamas (and Papas!), I am sure you feel me on this one – the equation of kids and clothing usually equals one giant battle.  Am I right?  Arguments over what to wear?  Discussions about what is appropriate to wear?  Can’t find the beloved uniform skort in the overflowing hampers? The insistence on wearing the “cozy pants” to school each day?  Or, heck, even the resistance to wearing underwear.  Any of this sound remotely familiar?!  Each one of my lovely, intelligent, spunky little angels has fallen to this clothing drama.  And I won’t name names.

If you’re feeling a little depleted fighting these battles day in and day out, I have a suggestion for you that’s super-easy to implement and very well may change your life. And trust me, it requires very little time in the grand scheme of things compared to the time you’ve been spending negotiating with your own little people.  This idea came to me via a lovely friend, and also Mother-of-Four.  As I was lamenting the dreaded laundry and clothing situation at my home, she suggested that the answer to all of my problems (strike that – one of my problems, the clothing situation) could be solved with something as simple as a HANGING.CLOSET.ORGANIZER.

I know, what even is that?!?

For all you weary parents out there, if you are anything like the hot mess I am, a hanging closet organizer is something you have never used before.  It is one of those things you dream of organizing your closet with, all nice and neat like the Container Store catalog shows.  I mean, don’t you dream of being that organized?  Or dream of even having the time to think about being that organized?!

This Hanging Closet Organizer is SO in your reach.  I wouldn’t have mentioned it if it wasn’t.  This is what it looks like….

Here’s what the hanging closets look like

You can purchase them from Amazon Prime (my favorite and yours, let’s be honest), and you’ll be ready to save your sanity faster than you can say “Free two-day shipping”.  I purchased one organizer for each of my babes, and labeled each with the name of the child.  Make sure the one you buy has at least 6 slots, one for each day of the week, Monday through Friday, and either shared slot for the weekend.  Label each slot of the organizer with the day of the week for easy reference.  If you follow through during the week, even young children or toddlers can participate. Just teach them to ignore the empty slots at the top and take the clothes from the highest position with clothes.  Badda Bing.

Implementation:

Every weekend, and usually right after I’ve done laundry and have a basket full of clothes to put away, we load the organizers for the upcoming week. Make sure to have your kids help you!  It’s critical to save the struggles later.  Decide on the outfit, uniform combination, or special occasion look for each day of that week, and load the clothes into the appropriate slots in the hanging organizer.  Make sure to include socks, underwear, or any other accessories that might be necessary.  You can even load sports jerseys or practice gear for the days of the week that are appropriate for after-school activities.  THERE WILL BE ARGUMENTS, trust me, but so much better to have those discussions in advance instead of during the chaos of the already-stressful and chaotic morning rush.  Maybe you can even have some meaningful conversations about clothing and boundaries and appropriateness and uniqueness.  You probably won’t.  But, hey, here’s to hoping!

All dressed and happy!

One more thing, and my favorite part of this time and sanity-saving practice – it actually encourages independence!  Your child will help you select the clothing, help you load the organizer, and then they’ll be able to execute getting ready without your help, input, or bickering.  You know, those who plan the fight won’t fight the plan and all of that… You’ll probably still have some significant battles coming your way over breakfast, the bumps in their hair when you help with their ponytail, or where their shoes could have possibly gone during the night – so give yourself a break with this one.

Just picture your little love bugs marching downstairs in their clothes for the day, proud, and, most importantly, without all the drama. It’s in reach. I’ve seen it. Get yourself some HANGING.CLOSET.ORGANIZERS and save yourself FROM the drama, Mamas!
