I cannot tell you how much I love our local library. It is one of the most valuable resources in our town for entertaining my kids, encouraging their love of reading, and introducing them to the beauty of books.
Our family has always made visits to our library an almost weekly activity. It all started when Grace was a baby and I was looking for activities to keep us busy and her engaged during the day. We would take walks to our local library for story time and enjoy books, finger puppets, and sometimes crafts.
As she got older, I continued the tradition with our other kids, and the opportunities for them widened as they became more able. We started attending the monthly Kids Programs, and signed up for Holiday activity after Holiday activity. We still enjoy many of these events to this day, from Marionette shows and Lion Dancers, to Birthday Parties for Dr. Seuss and Animal Shows. Our kids deliver letters to Santa every year through a mailbox at the Library, and they are big fans of the Lego-building classes. There is no end to the entertainment that the Library has given us.
And let’s not forget the books! The books we find there keep us busy at home, and so often keep my kids from bothering each other.
One of my favorite things to do with my kids is reading with them, and I am not kidding when I tell you that we literally check out up to 50 books at a time each visit. I swear the librarians see us walking into the library and mutter, “It’s that family again.” I can’t tell you that we’ve never lost a book, nor can I tell you that we always return our books on time. But, hey, paying some fines here and there is a heck of lot cheaper than buying all of these books. Grace, who especially devours books these days, is able to try out new series after new series, and for my early readers, I’m able to keep the content new and interesting.
