Thank you St. Thomas Aquinas 4th Graders!
A week or so ago we had a 4th grade class visit our kitchen for a field trip. Making pizzas, celebrating food, meeting the kids– we had a ball. With dozens of employees in each kitchen, only a few of us get to interact with kids on a daily basis. As much as we love visiting the schools and talking with the students, most of our dedicated staff has to actually cook and deliver our lunches and make sure we are the best school lunch company around!
Of course the kids seemed to have fun during the field trip, too, but it wasn’t until we received a class-made book of thank you letters, that we realized how universally wonderful the experience was.
In their letters, the kids talked about the huge ovens, meeting Chef Travis and how much they learned. They drew pictures of eggplants and rainbows and described their favorite Choicelunch meals. Some kids were astute enough to comment on how organized we are and how they wave to our drivers when the trucks leave the schools after lunch.
We cook thousands of meals every day, but to have the kids in the kitchen, for them to see the complexities behind something seemingly as simple as their hot lunch, and to have these relationships deepened for our kitchen staffâ¦those things are priceless for us. Apparently it was meaningful for them too!
