One of our guiding principles has always been, "Do the right thing for the right reasons". The right reasons for wanting to use compostable trays have always been clear, but finding the exact product we could stand behind as the "right thing" has been anything but simple. After almost a decade long search, we believe we've done it.
Our new hot entrée containers are made from a molded fiber bagasse material made from a blend of wheatgrass fiber. This school year, we're introducing two significant improvements. We've improved on the liner and switched to PLA-lining, which is a bio-based corn derivative that is annually renewable and compostable. We're also introducing a bigger tray for our "large" entrees, designed to accommodate even more food for hungry and growing middle school students.
Instead of being added to the waste stream, our compostable trays go straight into green waste along with any food remains.* Bones from the Herb Roasted Chicken, the last ounce of brown rice from the Tikka Masala that goes uneaten, the leftover peas and carrots that may have been pushed to the side - it's now all fodder for the compost pile in a vastly simplified sorting process that saves our schools time and money, while helping teach our kids about sustainable living.
Who knows, the mulch derived from this composting may soon nourish a grove of fruit trees or field of veggies picked for future Choicelunches.
And that's a nice thought indeed.
Available after Labor Day!
