What’s in that SunnyD?

The week before we brought our son home from Korea, my husband and I went to the movies and saw Juno. It was the quiet before the storm, when a matinee didn’t require long-term planning and a babysitting budget. I laughed so much my side hurt, and loved the movie’s positive, but complex insight into adoption.

The opening scene is of Juno chugging SunnyD. I have no experience of SunnyD, no other reference point and until yesterday, only thought of SunnyD in light of that comic scene.

Yesterday, though, I learned about SunnyD’s work with Scholastic, the classroom book company. Families are encouraged to collect SunnyD labels, so teachers can add needed texts to school bookshelves. Who doesn’t want kids to have the classroom resources they need? It is a cunning marketing move.

The hiccup may be, though, that SunnyD isn’t pure juice. It’s actually water and high fructose corn syrup with a bit of artificial coloring added.

WHOA! Suddenly my position on SunnyD changed. No longer do I just think of Juno. Now, I am suspicious and a little conflicted on a product I have never even bought.

What do you think of this? Savvy marketing approach to get kids to ask for SunnyD when grocery shopping? Afterall, it has 100% of daily Vitamin C intake. Maybe it isn’t the threat I fear?
