Life Comes Full Circle – Reconnecting With the Friends of My Youth

I attended an elementary school that ran from kindergarten through eighth grade. It was a small school, with only one class per grade, which meant that the same 28 kids, give or take a few, were all together for nine years. NINE YEARS!?!? That’s a long stretch in any phase of life, and especially the formative years of youth.

After being together for such a long time, the girls and boys in my class began to feel like family. We spent a lot of time at each other’s homes, traveled together, played sports together, and almost knew each other’s families inside and out by the end of those nine years together. We all experienced the ups and downs that come with growing up, but I had a solid group of girlfriends that remained steady during my time there. As I look back on my childhood, these girls were there through it all – learning to read, trying out new hobbies, finding my groove in the classroom, and even going through puberty.

A couple of weeks ago, Justin and I traveled down to Southern California for the wedding of one of my best friends since first grade. Her family and mine were always close during our childhood years, and we spent many wonderful vacations together – playing in the sun in Palm Springs, swimming in the lake in Lake Arrowhead, and enjoying each other’s company. She was such a gift to me during those years of change that come during grade school and middle school.

This wedding was fantastic, from start to finish. So full of love, and such a wonderful reflection of both the Bride and Groom. Justin and I so enjoyed our time. What also made this time incredibly special was getting to spend the evening with five of the girls who were constants during my childhood. Not living in close proximity to them, we rarely have time like this together. It was so life-giving to be able to catch up with them about all the ins and outs of their lives – their families, their husbands, their children, their careers, their hobbies. I love how each one of them is just an older version of who they were in their youth, as I am sure I am. Although I do not see them all as often as I would like, I am so grateful for their role in my childhood and my formation, and for the continued opportunity to know them and love them.
