Just a Fist Bump

It was just a fist bump.

Our family was on vacation in Southern California, all six of us sharing a small space and, clearly, only a small ounce of sanity was left. Sometimes we all just have those days, you know? The kids are bickering with each other, it’s raining so we can’t really go outside, and the coffee high clearly wore off hours ago. Having to make dinner is just around the corner, and we all know how that can go. How long until bedtime again?!?!?

Isn’t this supposed to be vacation!?!?

My kids couldn’t agree on how to spend our time inside. One wanted to play Yahtzee, and the other Chutes and Ladders. We finally settled on Chutes and Ladders, and before we knew it there were accusations of cheating and foul play. Someone was crying. I settled in on the couch to read a book with our youngest, who then decided he would rather fight our disgruntled gamer for the ball in the hallway.

Why couldn’t everyone just get along???

Justin to the rescue. He told us to grab our jackets and a frisbee and meet him outside, where he rallied us to walk to the nearby park and play for a bit. It was misty and drizzling, and the kids went running off like they had just been freed from their cages. Arriving at the park, Justin and I tossed the frisbee around, Brady and Hayden chased and tackled each other per usual, and I looked across the park to see Quinn and Grace sitting on a park bench talking. Just a second later, they gave each other a fist bump. Such a simple gesture between our oldest and youngest, but one with so much meaning for me.

This is just a season, my friends.
