I was walking down the greeting card aisle in Target the other day and saw if from afar. A Christmas greeting card picturing a child, sitting docile on the lap of Santa Claus, list in hand, quietly sharing her wishes for Christmas Day. And it totally made me laugh.
Every year since my kids were little, we’ve had some level of anxiety surrounding our visit with Santa. Whether it’s the nervous clinging to our leg as we wait in line to see the Big Guy, or sheer and utter terror as we placed our babies on his lap, there’s been no shortage of uncomfortable feelings about this time-honored tradition.
Santa Claus is a scary looking guy. He’s big. He has a huge beard. He randomly bursts out with an overpowering and sometimes borderline sadistic shout of “Ho, Ho, Ho!” And he is stranger. Yet kids are supposed to look past all of this and sit peacefully on his lap and tell him their deepest wishes? Seriously!?
Kids, I feel you on this one.
