How To Help Keep Your Heart Beating: What and What Not To Eat

Happy familyFebruary is American Heart Month, which raises awareness of the effects of heart disease and prevention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and it disproportionately affects women. Each year, one in four women dies from heart disease.

But heart disease is preventable. Here are some tips to reduce your risk:

1. Eat more fresh fruits and veggies.

A nutrient-dense diet reduces your risk of heart disease and other health problems. Aim for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

2. Move more.

Get 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise at least five days a week. You could also break up your workouts into three ten-minute sessions each day. How do you know if your workout is moderate intensity? You’ll be able to talk, but you won’t be able to sing.

3. Relax.

Make “you” time. Take 10-15 minutes each day to sit quietly, without distractions.

4. Reduce your sodium intake.

Most of us eat too much sodium, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop using the salt shaker at home. Processed foods like breads, cold cuts, cheeses, soups, and snacks account for 44% of the sodium we eat. Opt for home cooking or low-sodium options of your favorite foods at the grocery store.

5. Regularly check your blood pressure.

High blood pressure doesn’t always have symptoms, so it’s important to monitor often. Check it at home, at the pharmacy, or your doctor’s office.
