This Ain’t No Green Thumb

We recently did some work in our backyard. It was a really fun project to work on, especially after years of not really having a yard that functioned well for our family. To be more specific, our old yard contained a maze of slate pathways that weaved through the grass, lined with thorny rosebushes. Not exactly the kind of place you want your four young kids running around with a football.

I have never been good with plants. I’m not sure if I can blame it on the fact that the past 10 years have been consumed with raising my babies, but I can never seem to wrap my head around another living thing that I have to care for. This is why I’m out on pets , and I think I am out on plants too. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to water them right, ensure that they have the right sunlight or shade, or even plant them properly. My Mom jokes with me that “the gardening gene must have skipped a generation with you,” and she isn’t wrong.

With our new backyard project, I decided I was going to plant some pots for our new space.

The yard looked amazing, but the patio needed a little more color, and one thing that I am good at is color. I gave myself a pep talk, and drove to the nursery to check out their offering. Seriously, I was like a fish out of water. It’s not like I had never been to a nursery before either – as a child I used to accompany my Mom on almost weekly trips to the nursery – but this was me going it alone. Aisles and aisles of different flowers, plants, pots, soil, indoor, outdoor, full shade, partial shade. It was a foreign language. I know I sound dramatic, but I had no idea where to start. I quickly found a knowledgeable employee, who was able to calm my anxiety, and show me where to start. After an hour or so, I had everything I needed for my six backyard pots, and a little more confidence that I could do this.

I planted the pots for our backyard, and they look decent. They definitely helped me achieve my goal of bringing a little bit more color onto the patio space. But when I was done, I was by no means yearning for more projects such as these.

We all have things that come naturally to us, and things that we believe we are good at. And then there’s the things in life that seemingly do not come easy to us. Things that, of course we can learn how to do, but that still require us to step out of our comfort zone. It’s okay if potting plants or bathing your children don’t necessarily bring you joy. For me, my thumb definitely isn’t green, but I am okay with that. It’s nice to know that I can still suck it up and pot a few plants when I need to.

Now, about keeping them alive….
