Do you watch reality shows on TV, such as ‘Top Chef,’  ‘Iron Chef,’ or ‘Cupcake Wars?’ If so, you know that judging food is a very subjective process. Tom Colicchio will praise the sweetness of a tart, while Padma will proclaim the same nibble, ‘bland’ and ‘tasteless.’ So it goes with our recipe development process here at Choicelunch. I have talked before about how we create recipes, conduct taste tests, collect feedback and do field tests to make sure that our dishes are as good as they can be before they go on our Choicelunch menu.

If you flipped through Real Simple this weekend while waiting in line at Target like I did, you saw lots of ideas about what to pack in your kid’s lunch. I personally eat these articles (or blogs) up, as I am always on the lookout for brilliant new ideas on getting real food into our kids.

Recently we took dozens and dozens of new lunch foods to a summer school program and had over 60kids and teachers taste the items and give us their comments. With almost a dozen new entrees, snacks and condiments, there were a lot of successes. In fact, you are going to see four brand new lunch choices in September, and we have a whole buffet of new recipes lined up to present over the school year. What is wrapped in this foil package, though, was by far the biggest win in Choicelunch history...

I probably have the best job in the world.  One of my main roles is to write the monthly menus for Choicelunch and work with Chef Travis and Chef Billy on creating new recipes that will thrill the 18,000+ kids we feed each day—especially yours!  (As much as I enjoy cooking and shopping for my son and husband (and Mom and Dad when they finagle seats at our small table), there is a REAL thrill in knowing our decisions can impact so many Californian kids.)

I used to think of summer days spent sipping lemonade when I thought of summer vacation… quiet, lazy, and leisurely. Who doesn’t count the days until the last day of school and the beginning of relaxation?
