February is heart month (could Valentine's Day have anything to do with that?) so to honor those of us with hearts (that would be all of us;) our super fabulous Nutritionist, Kelsey, has put together some tips to keep your ticker ticking on and on:

Jumping rope is one great way to help build a healthy heart, but there are many other ways too!
Did you know?
• A high fiber diet helps control appetite and can help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels. What types of foods do you know that are high in fiber? Carrots, berries, peppers, and broccoli are just a few examples of fruits and veggies that both contain fiber and are high in antioxidants, which also help to protect the heart.
• A heart-healthy diet doesn’t necessarily mean a low-fat diet. The healthy fats that your body needs are called monounsaturated fats. These fats help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and other risk factors. Don’t know which foods contain these healthy fats? Almonds and olive oil are two great examples. These fats can also be found throughout our Choicelunch menu! Our Avocado Sushi Roll is one yummy option that your heart and tummy will both agree on!
• Whole grains are the way to go! Whole wheat bread and whole wheat pasta are two ways you can incorporate whole grains into your diet. Whole grains are a great source of fiber and other nutrients which help regulate blood pressure. Any of our pasta dishes will help add these grains into your daily routine!
• Why not incorporate fish as a component to your family’s weekly dinner schedule? Certain types of fish contain a good amount of healthy fats called “omega-3 fatty acids” which help to lower blood fats called triglycerides. Salmon, mackerel, and herring are all great options. Not a fan of fish? Try walnuts and soybeans instead!
• Rethink your drink! Drinks high in (unnatural) sugars create high spikes in blood pressure which isn’t healthy for your heart. Can you think of options better for your body? Try adding slices of fruit to flavor your ice cold water! This option is refreshing, delicious, thirst-quenching, and who can forget: heart healthy!
