For the first time, Choicelunchers will soon have their pick of 100% apple juice or100% orange juice! The new orange juice will be rolled out in the coming weeks to our schools that currently offer juice. Not all schools elect this option, so you might want to check with your kids to see what they see at lunch.

We get our juices from local suppliers, so it is fresh, and packed with vitamin C.You might notice that the juices are petite. In our effort to give kids choices they’ll love and a lunch parents are proud of, we are offering more liquid fruits, but in reduced sizes. The fact is, 100% juice has lots of vitamins, but many kids drink a lot of it. Even too much of a good thing is still too much.

As a pediatrician who works to prevent and treat childhood obesity, I STRONGLY discourage juice as an option.

I tell my patients "eat your fruit" don't drink it.

Juice is just pure sugar. No one is dying of scurvy in this country. Please reconsider. and give fresh fruit rather than juice.

the whole fruit has fiber at least and that prevents rapid absorption of the sugar and promotes satiety.

I've been serving lunch a few times since the new juices came out and the kids are complaining that the juices aren't as good as the old juice plus it's only 4 oz and not enough for them.

Thank you for your comment, Dr. Yen. I think a lot of parents, particularly of younger kids fully agree with you. We will look to more comments from parents and others and reevaluate offering juice. Many schools have chosen not to offer juice at all. All Choicelunch schools can customize what is offered to their students. Is that a possibility at your school?

please don't take away juice! I have a skinny kid who is not much of a fruit eater (though does eat veggies). He won't choose milk and I think some vitamin C and even some sugar calories are good for him. as long as it's real juice (not 'juice' drink), I'm fine with it.
